Agent Hugh Reading’s Office, Interpol London, England

Reading stared at the clock. They should already be at the hotel, and if they followed the plan, they should have already met up with Orlov. If he were running things, it would have been a quick exchange. They should have returned to their room, ordered their room service, feigned Laura’s illness, and had their flight rebooked for immediate departure.

And they should have sent him an update.

He had none, yet he did have a message from Kane indicating he was to head to Moscow under no circumstances. That meant something had gone wrong. It had to. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how it was looked at, his denied visa prevented him from even boarding an airplane destined to the Russian capital.

His partner, Michelle Humphrey, leaned into his office. “You look like shit, Hugh. Somebody shoot your dog?”

He looked up at her. “Huh? Shoot my dog?”

She shrugged. “I’ve been broadening my horizons and watching more American programming on Netflix rather than the BBC.”

He eyed her. “I don’t even know if an American would say that.”

“I’ll do better.” She grinned then became concerned again. “Seriously though, what’s bothering you?”

“Jim and Laura are off doing something stupid again.”

She shook her head as she leaned against the doorframe. “How about you just tell me when they’re not doing something stupid?”

He chuckled half-heartedly. “Yeah, I suppose.”

“What are they up to this time?”

“They’re in Moscow, meeting up with a known Russian fugitive. He’s supposed to hand over some documents that have been discovered that rewrite history, apparently.”

Michelle whistled then stepped inside, closing the door. She dropped into a chair in front of his desk. “Are you doing anything about it?”

“I tried to go with them, but my visa was denied, and they’re overdue for a check-in.” He glanced at his phone again to make certain that was still true. It was.

“What about your ‘friends?’” she asked, air quotes delivered.

“They’re involved, but I don’t know to what extent.”

“Then all you can do is wait. If everything’s fine, you’ll hear from your friends shortly, and if not, your other friends are better equipped to help.”

Reading sighed heavily, leaning back. “You know me. I’m not one to sit idly by.”

“Then you definitely picked the wrong job. Interpol is mostly sitting idly by while everyone else takes the glory.”

“I never should have taken this job, though the Yard would have stuck me behind a desk after my face was all over the news.”

Her jaw slowly dropped. “That’s right, I forgot all about that. You were questioned by a parliamentary committee about your involvement with that Apache on the motorway.”

He rolled his eyes. “Ugh! Please don’t remind me. I’ve been trying to forget that since it happened.”

“But isn’t that how you met them?”

He nodded. “Yes, it is.”

“Then perhaps that’s what you should focus on. Sometimes good things can come out of bad situations.”

He grunted. “I can’t see what good can possibly come out of this. They’re risking themselves for pieces of paper.”

She held up a finger with a smirk.
